Our last stop. After nearly a year of traveling this trip comes to an end. But we wanted to spend our last days in a nice place – the luck was with us… Even though driving around with a Tuk-Tuk and searching for an accommodation is not our favorite thing, but the gods were gracious to us. After only a few stops we found a beautiful place directly at the beach with a well-functioning AC. Every morning we woke up with an amazing view and the sounds of the wave. While having breakfast on the balcony the surfers in front entertained us a lot. How can we possible stand being back in Hamburg without a view like this?

We used our days to go whale watching, buggy boarding (and hitting our chins badly), swimming and relaxed a lot….

Sri Lanka was a great last country to visit and Mirissa exactly the right place for the last nights. Unfortunately, this adventure of our lives comes to an end with this last stop……

Tissamaharama/ Yala National Park – are we still in Sri Lanka or is it Africa already?

Another day of getting up way before sunrise to increase the likelihood of seeing Leopards during our safari. And it was absolutely worth it!!! We saw almost everything one can wish for: water buffalos, mongoose, elephants and of course leopards. To be precise, a leopard mother with her cub wanted to cross the road and therefore walked a whole mile next to the street so that we could see them all the time. At some point they were only around 8 meters away. We were super impressed by her actual size and beauty.

It’s amazing how diverse Sri Lanka is. Let’s see how the beaches will be in the south west 😉

For someone who loves animals this part of our journey was very special – who could that be? 😉

Haputale – Teeplantation as fare as the eye can see

This adventures started with a 8 hour train ride from Colombo to Haputale. Niels convinced the train driver (with the help of some money) that he and a guy we just met, can ride in the locomotive. They had the train ride of their lives and a lot of fun while the beautiful landscape passed by.

Our first accommodation was directly situated within the tea plantations. On our first day we were wandering around the tea plantations which offered amazing views. The view was so amazing that we actually caught our first sunburn in ages but I guess the high altitude in combination with a long walk did do any good. We even had to take a small detour because our way was crossed by a rattle snake. Haputale is situated in the highlands of Sri Lanka, 1472m above sea level.

The next morning we got up at 4:30 am and went to world famous Hortons Plains. After quite a walk we arrived at a breath taking view point where the cliffs drop off 870m into the valley. The 9 km walk is quite nice but taking the entrance fee of 2.500 rupees (17€) and the transportation cost of 4.500 (30€) in consideration, it’s not worth it’s money – especially if you are not an early bird. There are free walks around Haputale which are free and even nicer. Before taking the train to Ella we paid a visit to another great view point: Lipton Seat. This is the place were Sir Lipton usually had his tea….

Again the train ride to Ella was amazing. This time Niels looked after our belongings and I could lean out of the train taking pictures and enjoying the fresh breeze. What an amazing way of traveling. Arriving in Ella, the bus had already left therefore, the Lushpackers (us) decided to take taxi and take advantage of the picture opportunities on the way.

Bangkok

Bangkok – city of shopping and crazy parties – that’s what we thought at least. But to be honest we seemed to got spoiled on our travels so far because Bangkok shopping is alright but nothing special at all. And since we didn’t manage to have a serious party, we can’t judge about this part of the Bangkok legend.

However, we managed to meet Dimi and Ruth (whom we have met years ago in Africa). What a great reunion. We had cocktails a roof top bars enjoyed amazing Thai food directly at the river and did extensive temple sightseeing. Also we managed to visit the grand palace. We have to say, this is quite something special: the size, amount of gold being used and layout are breath taking.

After this amazing stop we’ll leave South East Asia and will travel to our last country on this round the world trip: Sri Lanka!

Siem Reap – Famous for its cultural highlight alias Ankor Wat

Ever since Niels older cousin told him about Ankor Wat he was dreaming about visiting this world famous temple areal. And we should not be disappointed. However, we started of with a little disappointment: the supposingly amazing sunrise never happend! The sky was extremely cloudy. But still the mighty temples of Ankor Wat were impressive. In the morning there weren’t to many tourist so it was very nice to explore the area before mostly huge groups of Chinese arrived. After Ankor Wat our Tuk-Tuk driver brought us to some of the other temples like Ta Prom, Preah Khan and so on. It’s not possible to see all the temples in one day but for us one day was perfect because after seeing at least 50 temples in the past few weeks we were kind of saturated with temples sightseeing. The city of Siem Reap has not much to offer besides many cafés, bars and restaurants for the large amount of tourists. We found a local food place with good food and amazing fresh juices for only 1,3 / 0,70€.

Koh Rong Samloem – A Place to relax your soul

Koh Rong Samleom: a place to hang lose and relax.

On our way we met two German guys who where looking for a place to stay. Our accommodation had one bungalow left so they decided without further ado to stayed in the same place. The next days we spent quite some time together chatting or playing cards, volleyball, frisbee and so on. The place consisted of a few huts and a main place. It was surrounded by “jungle” and was very quite. We had nothing to do besides sleeping, swimming and relaxing.

But a next adventure was waiting for us. The moment we left the place everything went different as planned: arriving at the dock we found out that the boat to the mainland left earlier than scheduled therefore our planned buffer time went down from 4 hours to -1h. We were pretty sure we wouldn’t be able to catch our flight. Luckily, we found another boat that took us to the mainland and we still had 1,5 hours before our official departure time. Normally it should take only 30 mins from the harbor to the airport with a Tuk-Tuk. Unfortunately, we found a a driver who realized that we were in a hurry and drove extra slow. After a while he slowed down even more and told us he could only drive faster if we give him extra money because driving faster would take more petrol. So we were thinking: for sure not, but saying: “sure, just go a head”. He speeded up a bit and we reached the airport 35 mins before departure. Luckily, the airport is very small and there was only one airplane in the parking slot. While Niels had a “polite” discussion with our driver, I arranged the check-in. Niels hardly ever gets really angry – this time he was. So angry that surrounding people steped in and settled the little dispute (including a police officer ;). The rest wasn’t a problem at all: the baggage was checked in easily and the waiting time was reduced to 10 mins before boarding 😉
